The series actually started out in December 1950, but was only broadcast in one region. It's national debut was in January 1951.

"Barwick Green" was selected from the BBC's copyright-free library; a suggestion to compose a signature tune specifically for the series was rejected, as it was only expected to run for six to eight weeks, and the producers couldn't justify the expense!
