Beginners might try starting on smaller versions of oranges, i.e. satsumas or clemantines.
These have a less well attached peel that can easily be removed in a single piece without any loss of juice. The segments are also more easily detatched from one another which makes them ideal for sharing. Unfortunately there smaller size is a severe limitation - it is quite possible to munch through five or six fruits in a single sitting.
