A Conversation for The Word 'Y'all'
New Orleans

First of all, I'd have to say that I liked this entry, mainly because I have experienced the "Y'all"-ing of people from the south of the US.
Now, regarding the subject of this entry. My experience, while travelling through the southern states of the US, was that this phrase was not used more than in the city of New Orleans, LA. I was there, attending some chat buddies' wedding, and met up with some locals, and the phrase "Y'all" came up repeatedly, often several times in every sentence spoken. As an example: "Y'all, should know that y'all are lucky y'all came here at this time of year, cause if y'all came at another time, y'all would miss some of the stuff y'all can see this time of year."
Now, that can be quite confusing for a native English speaker. Then imagine what it would be to us visitors that were there from Sweden.
That's kinda what I wanted to tell y'all. Now, y'all have a good day, y'all hear?

I like how the locals have that sort of french accent thing going on in louisiana... i also like how they pronounce it "N'orlins"

Yep, they do have that weird french-like accent down in N'awlins. They also like skipping letters whenever possible..

Say, br'a... they say y'all in N'awli-uns cos they speakin' Yats, dawlin. Many of their words are French... or used to be, somewhere in their evolution. There is a full explanation of this wonderful dialect on The Gumbo Pages, which are amusing and taste lovely. Now... y'all want them po-boys dressed, or wit' nuttinonit?

Me too. Maybe we could approach the BBC and say 'we want to make a documentary about N'awli-uns, particularly the food and the language, so sponsor us.' It might work...

Good idea. Or we could see if H2G2 could arrange a world-wide convention in New Orleans, where they pay for hotels and subsidise the flight tickets. Now, that would be fun.

Pralines? (Which must not, on any account, be pronounced 'prah-leens'.)

Pralines could very well be it. As I said, I haven't been there forquite a while, and I'm kind of amazed with myself for remembering that they called the crawfish "Crawdaddies".

I've never been there at all... just think about it a lot. And cook.

Well, it is a real experience to be there during summer weekends. non stop partying from friday afternoon to sunday night.
One of the locals I met there said that the best way to prevent a hangover in New Orleans is to keep drinking and stay drunk.

In deed.... I'll see if I can keep that up this weekend while in London with the rest of the H2G2-ers....

Oh yeah, the get-together. Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I was nearer London... then I think, nah.
Still sulking about not having personal transport.

I'm not near London. Well, depending on what you compare with, of course. It is true that I'm on the same island as London, but then it is also true that I have a 7 hour train ride to get from where I am to London. Either that, or a quick flight of about an hour, but the train is usually cheaper, and you get more time to sleep and read and stuff.
