I recall an edition of "That's Life" which featured the Prtsmouth Sinfonia. Some Chap had bought one of their records, under the impression they could play.
Esther et. al were amused and did a piece on them (well, they beat Cyril's ode by a long shot). 
I wish I could have joined an Orchestra/Group like that when I played the clarinet. I think I would have kept playing, when you enjoy playing, but you're not very good, playing with really good musicians can be a bit intimidating!
