A Conversation for 'Contact' - the Film
Woodpigeon Started conversation Mar 11, 2002
Hi GB, I just found this article at random, and I think it is excellent. I read Contact about 15 years ago ( staggers back in amazement that it really is that long ago), and it stands out as a book that made a deep impression with me. The book finishes with a very tantalising (and different) finish where a pattern, a circle I think, is found in a deep investigation of the number Pi at a non-decimal base, thus giving a clue to an even greater intelligence at work in the universe. The book also contained a robust questioning of established religious faith systems, which at the time for me, was very timely. I have read a few more Sagan books since, "Candle in the Dark" being my favourite.

Thank you very much, Woodpigeon!
It's such a pleasure when someone reads your work then posts to tel you they've enjoyed reading it, never mind that you thought it was excellent!
I'm touched and flattered
I saw the film - fell in love with it. When this was in PR - Jim Lynn recommended the book to me, I found it in my library and borrowed it. I found it hard going - it was so different from the film
e,g, Elly's relationship with the Russian, in the book, and no relationship with the President's spiritual advisor.
I really preferred the film version, but I don't know what would have been my choice if I'd read the book first!
Thanks again for your kind words.

You're welcome! I liked the film because it captured the essence of the book, and the visual artwork was fascinating. It's one of my favourite movies.
I got the Sagan title wrong - it's not "Candle in the Dark" it's "Demon Haunted World" - oh well...
