A Conversation for Sticks
Sticks vs. towels
The Artist Formerly Known as Nerd42 Started conversation Oct 14, 2002
I just went on a survival trip this last weekend in north-east missouri, and on the trip, I spent a lot of time poking at things with sticks, and thus, I found out that this article, which I first read the previous week, is absolutely true.
This brings up the question of sticks versus towels being the most useful items for hitchhikers to have. I'd say it's better to bring a towel on a trip (I took two) that to take a stick, because as the article says, a common stick is merely a piece of dead wood off a tree, and a towel is not so easily aquired.
I liked this article so much that I put a link to it on My Space. U203906

What about a Swiss Army Stick? It'd be like a normal stick, but it would also fold out to become a boomerang...

Just a thought.... If you have two towels, like you say, you could tear one into strips in order to bind the second towel to the stick, thus making a perfectly safe padded 'training stick'. I feel it's important to learn sticking techniques thoroughly before attempting them in an uncontrolled environment....

That would work.
Personally I would take a stick anyday. It's alot harder to to keep a savage friend from your food with a towel than it is a stick, and besides, when it comes to the ravenous bugblatter beast of Traal you could just poke it in the eyes (or yourself for that matter).
