Just to ask, hwat are peoples opinions on the film. I know its a futile argument, no one will actually change their minds but so what.

BTW I do fall into the "Tedious" category even though I will ocncede teh following points.

1. It is very pretty
2. The musics good
3. If you watch from when teh discovery appears to before the acid trip at the ned its a good film.

I definately think that the film is a work of art, but I agree that the "trip" sequence feels too long.
But the "Dawn of Man" part I cannot dislike - almost every scene is shot as if it was a landscape painting with action, and the whole beauty of the ape progress is very, urm, moving.

Okay - I'm failing to describe what I mean, but I feel that a slightly overlong trip sequence is the only thing I would change about the film, if change something I must.

Seagull's Lost Horizon

the first time I watched it I was expecting something truely great, I was dissapointed, and thought what was all the fuss about, what was all the stuff at the beggining, my oppinon changed the second time and having read the book and understanding a whole lot more about it I think its brilliant.

although it is slightly boring in places

By movie standards I can understand why it is viewed as "tedious". 2001 is certainly not the usual popcorn merchandising sci-fi scholck that is produced. It requires involvment from the viewer and an active willingness to think.

Like all good science fiction really 2001 is challenging and if the audience is not prepared to be challenged they won't enjoy it.

Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like

Surely the point is that it wasn't made as part of a trend? The uniqueness of Space odyssey is that it was made by a master film-maker, not a hack given money to jump on a band-wagon or too fuel a range of kids toys?

Which is why Phantom Menace borders on the sucking status and 2001 does not...

Agreed. Now if you want a film that is truly boring tPM has to be up there.

Boring, non-sensical and internally inconsistent with the logic, and indeed stories of the other three movies...smiley - smiley

I think what I found most upsetting about Phantom Menace was that the kids sitting in front of me clearly didn't give a monkey's about the movie-they were all too busy comparing notes on which of the toys they had and which ones they wanted. It made me very sad that this discussion seemed to be the focus of their enjoyment of the movie, not the movie itself.

I came out of the cinema a sadder but maybe wiser man. smiley - sadface

Seagull's Lost Horizon

sign of the times I think in this materalistic world,

it seemed to be a repeat of star wars, with two jedi's where the older one got killed, and the black and red one whose name I can't remember was pointless with all the hype I expected more of him, it didn't do much for me,
