I hadn't heard of cabbies' shelters before, and really enjoyed reading this. smiley - smiley

Which one is pictured? It would be nice to add the location to the picture caption.

I just realised Google Street View might come to the rescue.

Here's the one at Pont Street, Kensington, for example:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=pont+street,+london&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=19.910905,43.549805&ie=UTF8&ll=51.497234,-0.158642&spn=0,359.998671&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=51.49725,-0.158499&panoid=OqeTb63dZTgRwhCc6J9h0g&cbp=12,23.78,,0,14.08

I'll add others when I get a moment (feel free to join in)

Gnomon - time to move on

MMF described it in the Entry as "Cromwell Gardens", but as far as I can tell it is Thurloe Place. It's directly in front of the Rembrandt Hotel which is in Thurloe Place.

MMF's photo of the shelter:

GoogleEarth's Picture:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=pont+street,+london&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=19.910905,43.549805&ie=UTF8&t=h&layer=c&cbll=51.496242,-0.170502&panoid=7k99ilxTEoMl3JF5r5WDEQ&cbp=12,194.48,,0,5.42&ll=51.496205,-0.170629&spn=0.000457,0.001422&z=20

The Rembrandt's Website:

So I'm changing the Entry to call it Thurloe Place and adding a tag for this to the picture.

That also solves the mystery of why all the rest of that list was in alphabetical order but the Cromwell Gardens one was apparently out of place.

MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship.

Thanks folks. The reason I changed it to Cromwell Gardens is because when I went to take the photo I walked up and down Thurloe Place, and actually found the shelter in Cromwell Gardens, in the middle of the road (what would be a central reservation) just past the V and A, so if anyone else wants to ind i, that's where it is. It may have been moved in the same way as the one in Russell Square was moved from Oxford Street, as it became busier, and because it was listed.

Hope that helps in my reasoning for changing it's location. Map info here...

As far as I can see, that map is not correct. From the point where Thurloe Place meets Cromwell Gardens to where it meets Brompton Road, the name is Thurloe Place and it is this part that has the shelter.

smiley - huh Oh well, it's in the right vicinity, I guess.

If anyone does go looking for it, just bear in mind it is by the V and A museum.

I worked there for a while, too, but later. I don't remember a green Victorian shelter, but there's a more modern shed there now on Street View:
