A good article, but a little fatalistic. If your get lumps while adding the milk these can - with patience - be stirred out, or in a more extreme case removed by a brief, thorough whisking or by putting the sauce through a sieve.
That being said, my flatmate seems perfectly capable of creating terminally lumpy white sauce, and of welding at least half of it to the bottom of the pan. I've not seen the like since the time I seared a layer of neeps and tatties to the pan, and that was on the uber-ring of death in my college kitchen.

If I get lumps then it come out of the pan & into the food processor,et voila,No more lumps!
