Brown Owl retires after 30 years - and Association do nothing to recognise the service
Cal - interim high priest of the Church of the Holy Tail Posted Aug 20, 2005
I'm sure other guiders would agree and that is probably why these position are hard to fill.
Allthough I think some times these jobs are played down for instance My sister was offered the Job of County ranger adviser, when she asked what it involved she was told "oh just two meeting a year at region"

So true. Think they are played down. It's a lot just to run the unit. You don't just show up. And to be an adviser or commissioner or whatever takes up so much more time.

Thats one of the problems I think, people just don't reaslise how much work goes into running a unit (and by people I mean most parents)

So true. All the parents have to do is drop their kids off and pick them up, go to the occasional parents night or whatever......

... what counts as doing a job 'properly' (although I think from your examples there are a few clear 'no-no's from this commissioner ... but again I don't know her circumstances)
If you are frustrated (i.e. she is stopping you form being able to do your guiding job properly) then you must speak to her about it, otherwise it will never be resolved.
Also, being single and not having children certainly does not mean you are not busy ... it normally means thats people expect more of you and think less about what else you might be doing ... Guiding is especially guilty of this! (Pet peeve - and no, I don't qualify for this category any more)
As for parents ... thats a conversation that could run and run! They are outrageous in their assumptions sometimes. All I can say is that even talking to the worst ones can help you understand how the girls turned out the way they did

True.
Please don't take what I said mean that just coz she's no family she's no time pressures. I know we all have more than one thing going on in our lives. But, like you said, it's good to do things properly.
you're probably right that someone should have a word with her. I remember once saying to her to let me know about a particular training several weeks in advance so I wouldn't get double booked. She never even mentionned it when it came up and I heard from someone else. So simple! Just a case of getting the right person to talk to her. She used to teach me, so it probably woyuldn't sound too good coming from me.
