A Conversation for Red Dwarf - The TV Series

Actually, it wasn't the ship's cat

Post 1

It's a common misconception that The Cat was a lifeform that evolved from the ship's cat. Holly, Red Dwarf's computer, even said it in his distress call in Series II.

However, as all Red Dwarf fans should know, The Cat actually evolved from a moggy which Lister smuggled on board and refused to give up to the Captain. So whilst it was indeed a cat on the ship, you can't really call it the ship's cat. It was Lister's cat. So there.

technically, the books can't be taken in the same context as the TV show. Because different things happen in the novels like finding a Duality Jump on the Nova 5, and the version of BTL was a later one in the novels that the one on TV....get the idea?
Grant and Naylor recommend placing the books in a parallel universe, one of the six or so.

Exactly. I also think Grant and Naylor like to consider the various books and series to take place in parallel universes. Hopefully the next series will take place in a parallel universe where the second half of season VIII never existed though...

And on the moggy subject...I call all cats moggies, using it as a slang term rather than a derogatory one. Although I don't like cats much. In fact I'm allergic to the little sods, damn them!

next series...? if there will be one after the film that is!!

Everything seems to have wound down in RD, its changed so much from its original concept, ie last human (now we have two... KK as well) demented computer (well, at least Holly hasnt changed! though in the film both hollies appear...) a self-centred, fashionable cat (where my nick-name originally came from, neither of us do the W word..!) a hologram who cant touch anything etc (now human again..) and a screwed up mechanoid!

Its just so overwhelmingly different, and i have to say i think i preffered it when it was low budget etc... anyway, just MHO... smiley - winkeye

I was wondering........

What's everyone's favourite Cat scene (if you can call about three people everyone)?

Aaargh! That's so hard, after Talkie Toaster (patent applied for) he's my fav.

ummmm.... I love Tongue Tied... Danny's such an amazing dancer!

The zebra coat is his nicest fashion accessory, IMHO

And the scene where there's 'a big swirly object'???? Know the one I mean? (yup, from those 4 words, you're meant to know exactly which ep I'm thinking of!!!)

And obviously, who could forget Duane????

hehe..

how about this quote?

Cat: All in all, a 100 percent successful trip!

Kryten: Sir, we lost Mr Rimmer.

Cat: All in all, a 100 percent successful trip!

Actually, if you want some RD quotes, go to www.mjsoft.co.uk then smartquote (it was there the last time i looked anyway!!!!

Ah well, lots to chew on..!

'I do not do the W word.'

How about.........

Season five, the one about the Psy-Moon.

KRYTEN They've taken Mr Rimmer. Sir, they've taken Mr Rimmer!!

CAT Quick, let's get out of here before they bring him back!

And the 'I don't do the 'W' word, in case anyone was wondering, comes from 'Queeg', which has to be one of the all-time classics. Did you know that Rob and Doug originally didn't know what the ending would be?

And also, I know the scene you're referring to, I think it's from 'Emohawk'

CAT I don't wanna get to technical on you guys but............all hands on deck, swirly thing alert!

Talkie Toaster was funny, but my all-time favourite episode was 'Camille'

LISTER One more time, what's this?

KRYTEN It's an uhhrrrrmmmmmmmmm........it's an uhrrrrrrrrrmmmmmm....

and that scene has to be the best!

What about the best joke?

Fashion Cat

Hehe... yup.. swirly thing alert!! that was exactly the one!

So how long have you been a Lister Baldrick????

I loved Queeg....

Q - chess.

H - ...tiddlywinks, monopoly???

Classic!!

I have no idea about a fav joke... possibly when Lister goes round eating the crew in series one, that entire scene cracks me up.... its all so great!

How about this, from season 8's 'Cassandra'

RIMMER You know what they say it stands for, don't you? Convict Army Nearly All Retarded Inbred Evil Sheep-shaggers.

And also, from 'In The Red'

'It's full of people so sad and depraved they couldn't even be elected President of the United States', about the Tank

I've not seen series 8 and only some of series 7... though i have read the scripts... as a result they dont stick in the brain quite so much....

and to me its really bizarre that the whole crew is back... i mean the point is Listers the last human..... ah well, maybe they ran out of plots... smiley - smiley

Try UK Gold.

And Danny-John-Jules states the reason for the resurrection as "It adds a whole new dimension to what we can do with Red Dwarf"

yeah... its no-where near as intimate as it used to be though IMHO.... And as for bringing KK back... not sure...

The film will either work very well, or fail after about half an hour i think....

Time shall tell!!

There was actually a finished script for the final episode of Red Dwarf, 'Earth', but it was scrapped because 'the plot was too similar to that of a 1982 episode of Dr Who'

why does that not surprise me??? and was that at the end of series 8 yes???

good point, but...

Post 16

Yes. Basically, they got back to Earth but created a huge tsunami that wiped out all the happy, sophisticated, future people.

i hadnt heard about that.... (i cant even remember how VIII finishes now!) hmm.... wonder why they didnt do something in a similar vein????

A microbe begins destroying Red Dwarf, everyone evacuates except the inmates, the gang escape into a mirror universe except Rimmer, who's knocked out by a drink can fired by a dispensing machine he stole chocolate from with the coin-on-a-wire trick. It looks like the end, even the Grim Reaper shows up........

REAPER: Arnold Judas Rimmer, your life is over. Come with me. Together we will travel to the banks.......

RIMMER: (simultaneously) Not today, matey

REAPER: of the Styx, where you...OUFFFFFFF (as Rimmer knees him in the nuts)

RIMMER: Remember, only the good die young.

REAPER: (in pain) That's.....never.....happened........before
(He falls)

The screen fades to black.

THE END

(erased)

THE SMEG IT IS!

And that's the basic plot of 'Only the Good.....', which was originally 'Mirror, Mirror', then 'Mirror/rorriM', then 'Every Dog'
after the dispenser's line 'Every dog has his day. Today's the day, and I'm the dog!', before it fires the can

ah yes... all comes flooding back now.... It seems a silly place to start a film though... esp since the film will need to be a stand alone....
