h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Because on the whole, other FPS games do absolutely nothing for me, but as the reviews were so good I thought I'd bite the bullet and part with some cash for this baby. And I'm very pleased I did - this game is excellent. Even though I've been through it twice, I have no doubt I'll go back to it again. Now if Quake had been this entertaining, I may just understand what all the Quakers were fussing about...

I've played the demo...

What a game...

It reaches new hights in terms of realism, which is an impressive achievement these days. What really blew me away was when I decided to go for a swim in some water and saw a shoal of fish swim past.

To say nothing of the incredible array of tactics available to you...

Another thing which really threw me, I completed the second demo mission fairly quickly... then went back to it and discovered that I'd only done about a third, maybe half of the stuff I could've done...

That degree of freedom is pretty darn impressive, really.

I might have to go out and buy it

(Word of warning, though... if you have less than 64 megs of RAM, I'd forget it. Section changes will be far, far too slow, I think. 128 megs is best...)

This is an awesome game.

Thing is, when Quake came out, only hardcore gamers had the machines to play it. So only hardcore gamers bought it. And ever since then, that's been the market 3D shooter makers have been going for.

All well and good, but while hardcore gamers will ignore story flaws or rudimentary plots in favour of being in awe over the T&L effects or their framerate, casual gamers expect a graphically-realistic world to have a feasible and entertaining plot attached to it - and "mindless carnage" isn't a plot. It's an entertaining interlude, but if the meat of your game is wall-to-wall killing, you aren't going to interest people who normally play simulations, strategy games, RPGs or adventures.

That's what Warren Spector did right at Ion Storm, while John Romero was busy burning capital and being a media personality. Yes, Deus Ex is a really great game, and this guide entry is very good too. Kudos.

I've thus far managed to resist buying Deus Ex... (having played the demo)... because I know it will take up a couple of weeks of my time, removing all urge to sleep, eat, drink, etc, etc...

Give in now! It's kicking around on budget for about a tenner at the moment. You won't regret it. Enjoy the GEP gun
