Hmmmm, so Washington did not know what to do with horse troops?

I've always found Washington to have been an inept commander.
Luckily for the USA, the British generals he was facing were equally inept (if not more so)!

He had tremendous personal courage and I really think that pulled him out of a lot of tough scrapes.

In the near future, I'm planning to write a little entry about his first defeat during the French and Indian War in western Pennsylvania at a little place called Fort Necessity.

Anyone who would build a fort in a swamp surrounded by wooded highlands that are within musket range isn't what I'd characterize as a military genius.

I think there's a history of silly fort placement in America. When I was in the Army, I was part of the 24th Infantry Divison (Mechanized). We were designated for desert warfare, and part of the rapid reaction force in the 18th Airborne Corps. Where were we staioned? Fort Stewart, Georgia -- A swamp.

On the other hand, I think Washington had class.

Yes, as the old joke goes, 'military intelligence' is....

I think old 'Red' was able to rise above much of the later politics because he had survived the war and the effects of both congress and local politics upon it. He found himself in one of those 'entry level positions' where you have to learn 'on the job' and he was in charge!

And then there was that thing, y'know, about, um....(looks nervously over each shoulder, draws blinds and types fast) officers....

And foreign ones at that. Except for old Mad Anthony of course!

I've always had a thing about trade school idiots.

That junk about the 'Class the Stars Fell On' at West Point.

Appointed Idiots are one of the reasons for the silliness of war.

I just can't keep from thinking that there might be a way to fight without so much horsedroppings.
