Good guide entry. I wonder if old Percival Lowell was totally wrong, however. As the Mars Global Surveyor continues to map the planet, it appears that water DID flow on the surface at one time. There are rilles and gullies that show the signs fo water runoff; it may not be canals made to order, but natural channels after all.

Hi! I'm setting up a page for The Mars Society on h2g2 over at: http://www.h2g2.com/A487965 .
The idea is to give people a little more info on the society, and ongoing updates about Mars and missions.
If you're interested, pop over!
Cheers, jd

Don't mind if I do, jd. I have attended a few meetings of the CalTech/SEDS Mars Society chapter. Interesting view of a very technical problem. Zubrin's book, The Case For Mars, has struck a definite chord in people on the topic of human exploration of another (no where near close-by but possible to visit) planet. You know an idea is getting popular when it starts spawning a whole sub-genre of BAD but entertaining sci-fi!

Has anyone heard of pyramids on Mars.... you know, ones that are actually pointed out by our pyramids on Earth. That'd give me 'n' all the conspiracy nuts something to talk about! Well, I have heard of such things but am certainly not sure of how reliable my information is nor for that matter whether it is true.... so if anyone knows anything about this strange phenomena please feel free to completely discount my invariably flawed knowledge, (dont expect me not to get upset and swear lots though.... I've seen pictures, what more proof do I want) I suppose its stupid of me to ask whether there's telescopes powerfull enough to view the surface of Mars and I certainly dont trust all those blokes with the power to say what pictures we get to look at from space probes. Damn, I think I'm gonna have to go on forever wondering....

Pyramid's on mars, that was in 'Total Recal' wasn't it?
I read recently a new type of necluer engine can get a rocket to mars in just 3 weeks!
But thats just a rocket, a rocket with life-sapport would take longer

Nope, the Plasma propelent rocket was in New Scientist a few months ago.Its very real.
I think the plan was to use convential rockets to get the speed up, then switch the plasma for constant acceleration.
Getting to mars does not have to take years, thats a common missconception.
