A diagram would seriously help. 
Is the exploding nail really safer than, say, a nail gun? Depending on what material the nail is made of, it could get very hot, very fast from the expanding gases...

The simplest way of visualising it is as a nail inside a slightly larger nail. Now, remove the middle section of the smaller, internal nail and fill this gap with a small explosive charge. When the 'head' of the smaller nail is tapped the explosive goes off and forces the point of the smaller nail through an aperture at the front of the larger nail - creating a kind of anchor.
