the point i am trying to make is that it is very hard to define what a goth does or does do/believe/have. Even though goth is one subculture many opinions, believes, fashions, attitudes, etc spiral off from it. The reader of the article probably wrote from her/his experience as it impossible to know every goth/person in the world. Yes some goths are very peaceful and non-violent but like most scenes there's bound to be a few who are not like this.
All i'm saying is there's no "all" in Goth. Not all goths do anything. They are themselves. Goth is a extreme ly hard thing to define.

Basically the determination of goth is based around/ orignates from the classic literature as well as oh so many other sources and the view that there is misery in all things good and goodness in all things miserable. Odds are that someone who likes all music, doesn't wear lace, velvet, tartan, etc and are generally right wing, anti-liberal activists is probaby not a goth. Though you do get weekenders and perky goths which I suppose could fall into those categories.
Contradicted myself?

By liking all music i mean to have a openmind approach to music - not just sticking to one band or type or genre. Someone who looks beyond goth rock or whatever and welcomes new types of music. And some may like to wear lace, velvet, tartan, etc. I adore wearing velvet, lace, gowns, flowy skirts, victorian clothing, edwardian clothing, etc but i love alot of music from tradition Goth rock like Sisters of mercy to buddist cd's. Music taste is not always linked to the clothing or vice versa. All people who i consider real Goths are themselves and not necceresserily (excuse my spelling) trying to conform and are just enjoying the Goth scene, literature, films, etc. There for i don't think there is a proper why of defining what a goth says/does/wears.

Unless you can define it by the imagery and styles used in the literature, films etc.

That's what i would know as the general idea of the Gothic lifestyle but now people don't always follow that. We've got all these different types and styles of Goth. All inspired by different and yet exactally the same thing. So you can't really define what is truly a Goth nowadays!

But all gothic lifestyles are based upon that and any other "gothic" lifestyles (spooky kids etc) aren't gothic. So it's actually fairly easy to point it out by how they actually live their lives.
Plus once you go into various philosophies behind the movement it becomes quite simple. Existentialism and Nihilism mostly.

They're all based upon one thing but don't neccesserily follow it e.g. Cybergoths - i find they often don't follow it as much or the ones i know don't.
They're are probably elements of it that apply to every Goth under the sun (or shall i say moon! lol but there's not that many parts of it that apply to all Goths nowadays. That's what i find. The more
Traditional Goths tend to be very similar but they seem to be becoming ever more rare. Partly to blame by different types of gothic fashion eg cyber, metal (kind of) and some other styles. Also partly to blame are the "spooky kids". But then again would you include them in the defining of the Gothic culture?

I don't count spooky kids. Theres only four MAIN groups that I count, though there are others (such as new wave) that I count. THe four groups are...
Classical
Romantic
Death Rockers and
Industrialists.
That covers pretty much everyone then. Cyber goths fit into death rock etc. I'm somewhere between Romantic and Classical and then theres Mopey and Perky goths as well but they fit into each other category.

I'm a mixture of Romantic and Old skool (though unfornatelly was not around to see the great birth of the Goth music scene of the 80's so have to recerate it from what i know). I'm mainly into those Gothic types as i am a old fashioned romantic and don't feel as i fit into this place in time. I like old fashioned ways. The days when you would have been frowned upon if you were going around having sex with half the town at 14! Seems a popular trend now! lol. Just not into new fangled, modern stuff as much. Seems it has lost it's elegance. I think Goth is the only way to return to elegance.
Sorry about the blabbering on. lol. That's typical of me! xxx

Jerms - a Brief flicker and then gone again. Posted Mar 14, 2006
Yarr.
Just because it came up in conversation; can I ask the opinions of you guys, on the image of Cybergoth?
I seem to be currently projecting an image which is more industrial than anything else (I get a lot of comments on my choker made from the ammo of a screw-gun... Yay me!) but I'm more of a cybergoth personality and would rather be projecting that as an image instead.
But what /is/ a cybergoth image?
More importantly, what can I afford (literally, the money cost) to change?
Shiny-type clothes are one thing, but a red laser coming out of where my eye used to be is just a /leeetle/ out of my range just now.
Your thoughts?
