Seems like this is a bit wider than simply the roman tortoise - surely a name like Roman War Tactics or some such would be more appropriate?
I wonder if any other armies used the tortoise principle...

It's known as the Testudo or something?
But yeah, it means tortoise.

In Latin, word form alters depending on use.
'Testudo', 'Testula' or 'Testuduo' may all be forms of a single word-stem "Testud".
However, I think Latin for turtle is Chelys or Chersus.
