'Mules owe their strength and resilience to the fact that they are hybrids'
But aren't hybrids generally inferior to the species they hybrided from? In this case one inferiority is obvious... infertility... why is it that mules excel in other areas?
It could, I suppose, be because they don't spend as much in the way of resources on reproduction...

It's because of the donkey part. 2-1 is a complicated mathematical equation, I know, but you can't let it beat you. Or if it's the 1+1/2 equation that's the problem just think about ginger and tonic.
