A Conversation for Driving Etiquette - Egypt

Whilst in Cairo I witnessed how traffic misdemeanours are handled. Our coach suddenly stopped in the midst of the moving traffic and the driver got out, ran through the traffic that was still moving on either side and approached the traffic policeman who was trying to keep things moving. After much gesticulation and conversation the driver returned and we set off again at a snails pace, on our journey. When we reached our destination we asked what it was all about. Apparently the coach driver had contravened some driving regulation, (who knows what because everyone seems to violate every sensible rule of driving on a regular basis!) and he had to give his licence to the traffic cop. Today he had to stop and pay the fine in order to get his licence back! We were told that cars are not insured in Cairo due to the high number of accidents which are sorted out by the shaking of fists accompanied by raised voices uttering curses, finally followed by hugging and hand shaking and the affirmation that the accident was due to the will of Allah! It seems to work!!
