Some people have found great methods of keeping animal odours very low in their home. My best friends have nine cats and when you enter their home you'd never know until one of them comes out to say hello. There are four litter boxes and they are cleaned often. I've often found that mixing some baking soda in with the litter helps greatly. Sometimes an air freshener is necessary, but not often.
Some of these cases you mentioned....it's just downright sick! There was a similar case of neglect and abuse here not long ago. A family of breeders had allowed their home to be covered in feces while cats, dogs, and even chickens ran loose in the house. A friend of mine who is a veterinarian went to the house and even found a dead kitten in an empty aquarium. She's not the squeamish type, but she told me later it made her skin crawl when she went into that house.
