A Conversation for 'The Crow' - the Film

the first crow movie was really great but i have to say the tv series was an awful attemp to cash in on a great movie as the crow story is based on those awful gothic ideas of eternal love and the tv show made it seem more like a guy learning to deal whith society to gain the prise of being allowed to die

Granted, I came into the Crow pheno during the TV series, but I didn't get that impression at all. In fact, I thought the TV series delved into the 'eternal love' bit more than the movie. If no other reason, then simply by the merit of them bring Shelly (and their romance) into more prominent focus.

I thought the Crow was a second rate horror film with second rate actors that would have languished rightfully at the back of the straight to video section of your local store had

a) the star not been Bruce Lee's son
b) the same star not died on set, mystery added by the urban myths and parallels with his father's death.

But maybe I'm just a cynic...

on this idea of eternal love the film brought it to a very effective point when in the end he gave all his energy and the chance to live again in order to put things right for his loved one were in the tv show he keeps moving forward and back from the point as if it was an unobtainable goal

Well.. Each to his own, but how did they handle it in the comix? I'm sure they couldn't just kill off the hero every time. I never got to see those, but I'd like to, some day. I never thought of it as being an unattainable goal.

Good point about the comix, 'nony. Why no mention of James O'Barr's role in actually creating the character?

As I said, I never got to read the comix.. In fact, all I know about them was gained from a conversation from someone who had.. The same who suggested I watch the first movie and avoid the second. (I'm glad I ignored his last bit of advice. smiley - winkeye)

the comics contained a lot of elements not included in the original movie as they were considered unacceptable but the first movie did well in trying to keep the story right

I really need to get my hands on the comics. Preferably in the bound version, though I would guess that would be expensive... I would doubt it, but.. are the comics still in production?

I dont think so, but has anybody here had the privilege of reading the full original screenplay. This differed greatly from the actual film, partly due to some parts they thought would be distasteful after Brandon died, and partly just because they wanted too, there are too many changes to sum up here, but the main one was the removal of the 'Skull Cowboy' An undead figure who tells Eric what he is, and is not allowed to do(i.e. interfere with the living/ apart from kill them i guess). He is also responsible for removing Eric's powers when here does interfere...(Darla and Sarah) But as for City of Angels, i wouldnt say it was a bad film, but compared to the first... Whereas the 1st moved me inside, the 2nd was a film i watched as entertainment. But come here:http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F66665?thread=196833 And see what i have posted to 'The Film That Moved You The Most' and add your support?? Bob

I have the original crow comics (3 graphic novels (one in german!) and a couple that they paired together) and some of the spin offs...

the spin offs all deal with other people dying not eric dying over and over again...i don't enjoy them as much i missed james o'barr's artwork...

the first movie...somewhat on the lines of the story (basic plot), some people take bigger rolls in the movie then in the comic book (like sarah) and the names are different (sarah is not called sarah in the book), eric i'm pretti sure is no rock star..in fact i don't think they ever say what exactly he does...

second movie they quoted more stuff from the comic book...once again brought in a child for the dead person to interact with but doesn't carry it off...bad guys are killed quickly before you get any real feel for them...alot of preaching...if it weren't for iggy pop it'd be a wash...

now has anyone seen the third movie?

i swear i read that james o'barr created the comic book because of soemthing tragic that happened in his life..maybe this is why the spin offs are found to be lacking

I felt on a whole that City of Angels was a much darker film, the way the Crow character (I can't remember the character's name) went about killing the bad guys. The end sucked though.

the third movie was horrid. the second was not as bad, the ending was worse though. the first was amazing. i was young when it first came out and it was wonderful. it wasnt trying to be a horror film, it was showing something much mroe than that. brandon lee died because of a studio's direct attempt to save money by cutting costs by releasing half the crew for the day to save on wages, including the prop master AND gun smith. this movie wasnt made to cash in and make scott obarr a rich man or famous, it was made to show the darker side of holiness. the crow it symbollic of everyman's desire to see justice done, and in this case justice was something that was viscious and cruel.

Musashi Himura, the ronin returns, is happy to be back

james o barre wrote the comic books because his life was pretty sh*tty all through bubt then he found a girl who he could talk to and they got together then she was taken away from him in a car crash so he invented the crow universe.

the third movie had some good ideas but was quite lacking although the third movies "jim" ill just use jim as a stand in name because the entitiy that returned wasnt called the crow the crow was the protagonists guide, any ways "jim" has a girlfriend her dad dont like him and a gang kills jims girlfriend jim gets in trouble for this and is executed by the electric chair this burns his face into the familiar backwards greek tragedy face design your all familiar with, he then systemattically seeks revenge with the paople who killed his girlfriend and finds out she knew something she shouldnt have i wont destry ne twists for you.

the charater of "jim" kept ash(from city of angels)dry sense of humour, and erics more poetic side he also toyed with the crims more then ash did, and injected a lot of emotion into the part.

there is a fourth movie coming out some time next year which will get a cinema release and i cant wait i personally love this series, and im considering wrting a in detail entry on it if you think it would be popular
