A Conversation for Driving on Autobahns in Germany

One of my favorite souveneirs of my period of service in Germany is a T-shirt that says "Where the heck is Ausfahrt, Germany?" (the word Ausfahrt being printed on the proper blue-and-white sign). I figured out quickly what Ausfahrt meant, but I just thought the shirt was hysterical. I also thought about getting the one that said "I drove the Autobahn (no speed limit)" but, for reasons never adequately explained, my chain of command never let me get an international driver's license, and so I never actually drove. I looked for a shirt that said "I survived the Autobahn," but the PX didn't have it.
One beautiful summer day, one of my roommates was very, very late (a matter of two, three, maybe more, hours) returning from work. When she finally arrived, she told us that the delay was caused by the discovery of a WWII-era cache of chemical weaponry that shut down _every road_ between her work site and our living area. Does that happen often?
