A Conversation for Driving on Autobahns in Germany
Autobahn - speeds
Phil Started conversation May 17, 2001
Whilst travelling on the Autobahn, do not assume that driving in the fast lane at 120 mph is permissable.
Whilst in Britain one would clearly expect to receive a ban from a court, on the unrestricted parts of the Autobahn, you can expect to have a 400 horsepowered BMW one car length from your rear bumper flashing you out of the way.
You daren't lift your foot off the gas, so edging over to the middle lane, (rather, being pushed over to the middle lane), the said BMW is then likely to scream past, increasing speed back upto 170mph.
Ironically it is these unrestricted stretches of the Autobahn that are generally two lane, and normally the speed is reduced back to 130kph if driving on a bridge or approaching a moderate bend.
For those motorists who know better, the police use oncoming facing Gatsometers camoflaged on the ground to snap the speeders' numberplates.

A whole car length away from your rear bumper? That much? When did you see this?

These cars that come roaring up behind you at ridiculous speeds, scaring the wits out of you are more often than not BMW, Audi or Mercedes. That is not too surprising you may say, but they all seem to be black with dark tinted windows!
