I understood that the locals call this 'Wally World' Is this true?

Dunno about that, but the main club there is called Visage, and I've found that if you pronounce it as "vizzidge" you get a wonderful look of outrage from people who go there. It's like pronouncing the 't' in filet-o'-fish in McDonalds!

Yeh, Leisure World is normally referred to as 'Wally World' .
Nothing to do with National Lampoon, you understand - apparently, it was nicknamed this by the local cabbies, apparently referring to it's patrons
