A Conversation for Constellations: Capricornus 'the Sea Goat'

maybe it was a mistake when I dropped out of the photographers group because now I have no say in what phos go on my articles.
I aknowledge that the BBC has their standard legalese where they state that they caqn use my aricle in any format they choose; however, for the record- I object to the boat photo. I feel it is not relevant to a constellation about a sea-goat.

Object at Editorial Feedback, Shagbark. The Editors might or might not listen to your objection, but they certainly won't see your comment here in this conversation.

It wasn't the Photographer's Group who applied the picture, it was me. I took the photo myself at Hull Marina, an h2g2 meet last month. I thought "Capricorn - a sea boat" was a pretty good pun, but I suppose it wouldn't appeal to some.

more to the point would be something like

I can't see that because it says "access is forbidden".

However, I presume it's a copy of Hevelius' original drawing. We can't use images which are copywrited, Shagbark. We can draw our own star charts or take photographs.

As I understand copyrights they are good for 90 years after the author's death. since Hevelius died in 1687 nobody should have the right to copyright his drawings.

Gnomon - time to move on

Hevelius's work is no longer in copyright, which means you can take your pen and your paper and make a copy of his pictures, which you can then scan in. But the photograph belongs to someone, and they took the photograph less than 90 years, ago so the photograph is still in copyright. You can't take that and use it without permission.

So are you saying that if I hand draw a copy of Hevelius's image photograph it and e-mail the photo to the editors they can use my
drawing, but not one made four hundred years ago?

Gnomon - time to move on

I believe that's true. Remember, Hevelius's drawing may be 400 years old, but the photo of it isn't.

this kind of reminds me of the discussion we had in F7286235?thread=4168104 post#66
whee you were saying that the drawing Ceyfort wanted for Ursa Major had to be one made by him. In that case Gnomen somehow came up with one.

That's right. If we provide photos, they must be ones taken by us. If we provide drawings or diagrams, they must be drawn by us.

I draw all the star charts myself using Microsoft Paint.

The editors have included a drawing made with my own hands of the Sea goat.
This is my version of the illustration originally used by Hevelius.

The picture is fine with me.
Looks like all 88 constellations have been assigned.
Congratulations for your part in this Herculean task.
