There's a school of thought that says Pythagoras was advising his followers not to get involved in politics when he told them to steer clear of beans, since in Ancient Greece votes were cast using beans.

So it was nothing to do with the ... erm ... rear-end side-affects of too many beans then?

Y'know...it could have been that too! 
Perhaps that studious old boy Bertrand Russell was just to shy to mention it in his history of philosophy!
