P.S. Long ago as a highschooler, I worked the night shift at a big gas station at the Okla. City end of the Turner Turnpike. Good location for a gas station, lousy job ...

That was one of my favourite scenes in the film, I think the other best scene was tractor tipping.

I haven't had the opportunity to go there yet, but it seems like New Mexico probably has some of the best neon left on the road; it's one of the focus areas of their preservation group. Parts of Illinois and Arizona are pretty well preserved, too. My next big trip though will be Oklahoma, I think.
