This is my favourite breed of dog. They just look so great. If I ever have the time and commitment to own a dog one day it will be a Weimaraner.

Thank you! He's 1 year 3 months now, and is STARTING to settle down a bit - we were at the vets last night for his booster injection and he was so well behaved, sitting beautifully for his weighing etc. Now I just need to get him to walk nicely on a lead...

Gorgeous dog, guess he's not a puppy now. Anyway, I have a question: in the article, you credit a German prince with creating the breed. I assume it has to do with cross breeding, then breeding the results, and continuing until you get a stable set of desirable traits, but this is just my supposition. Do you know what's involved in creating a breed, and how one goes about getting it "recognized"? Are there many new breeds being made today? Wow, I guess I had more than one question, lol. Great article, I like your writing style.

I'm not really here

This isn't my entry, but you've got it pretty right about how breeds are created. A lot of 'line-breeding' (ie IN breeding) goes into creating a breed too, which I think shouldn't be allowed, but there is no-one to tell anyone what is and isn't allowed in dog breeding. Even if the breed is registered by the Kennel Club, they can only set rules on which dogs they will register.

Some breeds are created because one little mongrel happened to be a fantastic dog and someone wanted more of the same. Some breeds developed for a purpose, so a working trait was selected for when breeding. Looks came later when KC registration became involved. Other breeds were created because there was a smiley - dog in an old painting and people thought it would be good to recreate.

KC info on registering new breeds.
