Dowsing doesn't work

Anyone who can successfully detect *anything* under controlled conditions using only dowsing can, in a very short space of time and with very little effort, make one million US dollars from James Randi.

Many have tried. ALL have failed.
That's all the evidence I need that this practice simply doesn't work.

We should be skeptical, but it doesn't do us any good to be too cynical. The prize is impressive, but one must feel it's worth the bother and have a need to prove something to go after it.
It could be that some dowsers just got lucky, a statistical tale on the luck bell-curve; but they could have instinctively understood more about geology than they realised. Or, they could have truly felt something that was not 100% repeatable.
