Stockton and Surroundings

Another good thing about thibg aboutstockton is that it is within a reasonable distance of San Francisco, Sacramento, and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
The distance to downtown SF is just about 2h in rush hour traffic, so if you leave at about 5:30am you can be at work in SF before 8 with some time to spare (You probably would be surprised how many people do that daily).
To Sacramento however it is just a drive of about 45min, so if you want to seea game of the Sacramento River Cats the AAA Team of the Oakland A's hop into your car and you might actually see some of their players there.
The Foothills are a totally different place from the all the clichees you might know about California (white beaches, the Golden Gate Bridge). There a lot of towns there that look still like they did during the goldrush in the middle of the 19th century. All this is in a beautiful mountainouus landscape, where you can do lots of other fun stuff like rafting or skiing.

In the original version of the entry ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A286562 )

I had the joke, "What is the best thing to do in Stockton?"
"Go somewhere else."

One of the few appeals of Stockton is the access we have being in such a central location.

I have to agree there...I grew up in Stockton, and the first thing I did when I could was get the hell out of there....with the possible exception of the food ( The New Yen Ching restaurant in Lincoln center on Pacific Ave. is my personal favorite). But seeing as the only thing to do in Stockton is to join a gang and steal cars (one of the highest car theft rates in the US) or become a high school drug dealer cum high school drop-out (personal observation), I don't find it all that exciting, even with the 49ers. You know why the 49ers get to train their BESIDES Alex Spanos putting up the cash? UOP disbanded it's football team years ago and now they have a stadium that just sits there collecting dust!

But I'm not bitter about it, and that's what's important.

I had a bit in the original non-edited version about the travails of the UOP football team doing so poorly it threatened the other athletic programs.

I've left Stockton quite a few times, but it seems almost like a black hole -- no matter how far away you get, Stockton drags you back. I even made it as far as Amsterdam, and Stockton sucked me back eventually. You will probably return someday as well, since we know that Stockton *sucks*.

LOL

Oh, so true!
The farther away I go, the more it pulls me back! Quick! Get the duct tape!
