There can be no doubt that Beavis and Butt-head was a showcase for crude, bathroom- and sexual innuendo-related humor. However, one thing that the show's critics often fail to realize is the underlying intelligence of the show. For every poop joke or euphemism for masturbation, there was some obscure pop culture reference buried almost Simpsons-like under the surface. Like Matt Groening's more obviously intellectual program, B&B was satire. Smart writers wrote about the dumb kids that are often (correctly) perceived as MTV's core audience, and therefore relentlessly poked fun at the very people who laughed hardest at it. The two main characters themselves frequently indulged in a sort of Mystery Science Theater for the idiot; that is, the relentless heckling of any and all videos played by MTV. Here was where the show truly shined-- by deconstructing the main programming (or at least what used to be the main programming) of the network on which it was aired. If you have any doubt as to the satirical abilities of Mike Judge, watch his current animated series King of the Hill. Watch closely, because many of the jokes float by so effortlessly, ity's very easy to miss them. Now flip back to B&B. You may be surprised how similar the two really are.
