I believe the "basic" form as you put it is called "in training" Then it progresses to "rookie" and to "champion" and finally to "ultimate". Also to "mega" for those who can do it.

For example, Agumon is a "rookie". What ever he digivolved from was his "in training" form, and Greymon is a "champion", metalgreymon is the "Ultimate" form of Agumon, and Wargreymon is the "mega " form.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to say, but "Angewomon" is actually the Ultimate form of .... whatever that thing is. Gatomon is the champion. It never becomes the rookie stage, for some reason. You can tell this by the animation when it digivolves. When a digimon digivolves from champion to ultimate, it gets a special animated sequence, which happens when Gatomon digivolves.

I believe the "yellow puppy" thing is its rookie form, and nobody knows what its in training form looks like...

Its "in-training" form is Nyaromon, a yellow cat-head with purple stripes on its back, and a tail with the same patterning. It is shown briefly when Gatomon is remembering her past.

yes u r right about the animation sequence but u forgot that gatomon can beat a champion (greymon)which means it would be a really strong rokie. and when they first digivolve u hear the level moves and type.
