We were just studying this in school today!! And since I didn't pay too much attention because it was the first two periods on Monday morning I'm very happy to have stumbled across this!!

Another side benefit: Phototransistors. Put a tiny light somewhere, and aim it at a photosensitive transistor. When light hits the transistor, it switches on and passes current... block the light, and the transistor is switched off. It's a handy way to detect events in electro-mechanical devices such as tape drives and printers. Photosensors have appeared in these devices since the 60's.
