It may be worthwhile updating this entry now - there has been recent legislation (coming into force on 11th December in the UK) on direct marketing, which makes companies assume an opt out, rather than an opt in - which may help a bit.
Also there is a huge (several tens of millions of people, if what I've read has been correct) Do Not Mail register in the States that's been around for a couple of months.
Plus, in the UK if you want to opt out in general, you can use the Telephone, Mail, Fax or Email preference service (all can be found online) to register your wish not to be contacted. Admittedly spam will still often get through as it comes from places out of UK legal jurisdiction, but from experience I have found it slashed the number of unwanted mail and phone calls.
