A Conversation for Pole Setting
Are they real people?
Knightshifter Started conversation Jul 13, 2000
Do these people really exist in our physical universe?
I have never seen this being done and I don't know anyone who has ever seen it being done, so where are these mysterious people going around putting up poles all over the place?
Come to think of it, I've never even seen a truck with these poles travelling around the place.
The truth must be that this article is a fraud. These poles are sentient life forms who move around when we aren't looking.

He-he!!!! Sorry I didn't see this sooner!
"Yes, Knightshifter, there is a "Poleman"!.....Quite a few of us, actually! I must admit, though, 'till I got a job as one I was as you are. I had never seen a poletruck....never seen a pole replaced! Actually, had never given it much thought.
I can assure you that the poles don't put themselves in, but it does seem that way!

Ok. Fair enough. But answer this... How the hell do you do it? Stay hidden I mean. You must transport the poles in a TARDIS or something.

HHHMMM.... Interesting question.
I can't speak for all polemen, only from my own experience. I would assume most have a workday much the same, though.
My workday starts at 6:30AM and ends at 3 in the afternoon. I'm on my first jobsite before most have had their morning coffee and off work well before the "masses". I also work an area that is about 175 miles across and 75 miles wide. All tolled, power, telephone and TV cable pole crews amount to about 6 crews in this entire area. A pole crew will work anywhere from one to ten different jobsites in a day. (We move around A LOT!!!)
Each job takes, on average, about an hour and a half(drivetime included). We don't stay in any one place for long!
I move around so much, and am so hard to find that I am required to carry a pager and a radio at all times...in case of an emergency. Without them, even my boss would have no idea where to start looking for me!(another perk for the job!!! )
For those reasons, and the fact that to the general public we look like any other big truck on the road, it's safe to say we are quite invisible most of the time!
Now...if I could just become truely invisible to the owner of that $250,000 house with the Zoysia lawn I must cross to set that new pole!!!
