Great article!
My own perception was that The Matrix was loosely based on Buddhism, in that the world in which we live is a myriad of illusions, and to see the illusions for what they are is to become enlightened.

The Matrix is steeped in a number of religions, including Gnosticism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. The scripts are meant to be ready on a number of different levels and to be applicable to a variety of faiths.

You may want to check this out: it is a long article, but it's really quite interesting once you get into it. I'm not /certain/, but I believe the guy was the technical advisor to the Wachowski(sp? ) brothers... There are sections on the religious connotations contained within the movie, as well as more technical considerations.
