A Conversation for 'American Pie' by Don McLean

Something I've Been Thinking About

Post 1

Near the end of the song, there is a lyric:

"And the three men I admire most,
The Father, Son and Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the cost
The day the music died"

It occured to me, that, perhaps, the second line is not a Biblical reference, but rather, a reference to the three musicians who died in the infamous plane crash.

The Father would refer to the Big Bopper, whose wife was pregnant at the time with his son. The Son would refer to Richie Valens, who, at 17, was the youngest of the Three, and had no children. Finally, the Holy Ghost would refer to Buddy Holly, whom the album is dedicated to.

Any thoughts?

I think you may be on to something there. I guess it can be deliberately read both ways though - like any good poem.

Great song - even before you know what it means. smiley - biggrin
