In "The Crash" section it is stated that "Holly got fed up and chartered a plane to take himself and The Crickets to Fargo".
The Crickets were NOT with Buddy Holly on that fateful tour.
In the next paragraph - "Cricket Waylon Jennings gave him his seat. Ritchie Valens pleaded with the other Cricket, Tommy Allsup" - neither of these men were members of "The Crickets". The Crickets (in their most famous form) were Jerry Allison (Drums) and Joe B Mauldin (Bass).
I also had an idea that it was Waylon Jennings who was involved in the coin toss, but that is only due to a vague recollection of an interview I once saw him give.... so i'll bow to the authors knowledge on that one.

Ooops.
Tommy Allsup actually was a member of "The Crickets" and Waylon Jennings was a member of Buddys backing band for the Winter Dance Party tour... but even though that backing band was billed as "The Crickets" for that tour, they actually weren't.
But I suppose that it could be said to be partially accurate to list him as "Cricket Waylon Jennings".......
