I remember reading somewhere that Altoids were originally created as a cough drop; when the manufacturer realized that they didn't suppress coughs, they marketed them as mints.

I've only ever seen them for sale in garage forecourt shops as travel sweets, implying some connection with taking your mind off travel sickness. I use the empty tin as a handy, robust, static-free environment for carrying loose CPUs. It fits anything from a Celeron downwards...

The Altoids homepage (www.altoids.com) says that they were originally intended to "relieve intestinal discomfort." I wonder if they ever came in prescription strength...
