A Conversation for Great Cold Drinks
Caffeine as a diuretic. And middle-eastern sherberts.

This issue came up recently in the US military - if soldiers is dehydrated and the only drink to hand is Coke, what should they do? It was established that the diuretic effect of Coke (or tea or coffee) is less than the benefits of rehydration.
Mind you - coke is very unsatisfying when you're parched. Ginger beer is much better. And the best commercial soft drink I've ever found is Citrus Spring Lime.
Also - here's some nice, tangy sherberts/ sharbats - middle-eastern cold drinks:
1) Pomegranate syrup (available in bottles from ethnic food shops). A tablespoon in a glass. Top up with iced water.
2) Tamarind pulp (available in jars - or in blocks to which you add hot water and squeeze the pulp out) - a spoonful in a glass, sugar to taste - iced water.
3) Rhubarb- use the syrup left over after stewing rhubarb. Top with iced water.

Caffeine can be a laxative, not just a diuretic. Too much really strong coffee - not caffeine tainted drinks like coke - can give you a good dose of the runs.
