Another way to pass notes is this:

Put the note in a notebook. Pass the notebook to your friend (hopefully sitting next to you). Then, if the monitor catches you, say, 'I need to get the history notes that I missed when I went to the bathroom and [other student's name] is giving them to me.' It works as long as it doesn't happen frequently.

In modern schools, information can be passed from pocket organizers and other electronic media with such ease, the art of note passing is being lost.

That's a shame . However, many schools still have yet to go one step toward being 'modern', so we won't have to worry for a while.

My arse R . Being an American high school student, I can assure you that pocket organizers and other electronic media are heartily banned -- at least at my school -- so we have to rely on usual methods. You ever tried the tiny-message-in-a-mechanical pencil's-barrel trick?

It has to be a very small note.

What's with the textbook using to hide the note? I mean, what ever happened to the pass it on method? Fold the note into a clever square, which doubles as an envolope, give the note in question to another student and have them pass it to the person you intend to give it to. Eventually the note will pass from a few different sets of hands and finally make it's way to the person it is intended to reach... this method isn't very reliable. People tend to open the note, read it, write a comment, and THEN pass it on.

During Chemistry class we didn't bother with any of this passing notes stuff. Three of us would "have" to share a book (it didn't matter that we all had a book each) and so full conversations could be carried out by writing in the margins of the book (Chemistry never was all that interesting for me - but I still get out my old chem book to see the notes)

I was just wondering if there were any Germans around. I was in Germany in '85 and would like to know if it is still as much fun there now as it was then. As to notes, we always just talked in class also.

That talking in class thing is something I've noticed here too. In lectures they just talk away - at home we'd be kicked out, or at the very least mortally humiliated by the lecturer. I can see a long period of adaptation happening when I finally get home. As for there being Germans about I think so, but I haven't spotted any - at the moment all I know of is one or two ex-pats like me lurking around h2g2.

Well, I suppose you're in school to learn, there's plenty of time for socialising elsewhere.

We always just used to talk. The teacher didn't mind much, as long as it wasn't too loud.

Same here, I've go to go - I was supposed to meet some people in the student union bar about 15 minutes ago. It's the last day before the easter holidays, so much drinking is in order.

I'm back but only for another 45 min. I'm planning on some heavy drinking myself, but I have errands to run first.

I would argue that point- Although the stated purpose of school is to teach, interpersonal skills are developing thruout the school years (up-to and including collage). There literally isn't enough time to spend socializing in a day.
