The difference between study hall and free periods seems to be the lack of teachers in the uk. this make activities more interesting. In our free periods, we would experiment with the microwave (trainers, biros, etc), hold competitions for who can hold their head in the (rotting) frideg the longest, and the following game:

create a track, using chairs in the middle of the room, so you can run around them. then see who can last the longest running round the track with two people piggy-backed. For more fun, run around the bin, making you dizzy.
