Nice entry! I'd like to add something about his ending...
There's a beautiful painting by David, painted just prior to the start of the French Revolution, entitled The Death of Socrates. I think it shows a lot about the way the French at that time held him in high esteem for his philosophical / political ideals. For David, I think Socrates was held in the same regard as Jean-Jaques Rousseau.
