A Conversation for Monterey Jack
post-Brexit nightmare

The spectre of American food standards being imposed on Britain post-Brexit has many terrors. Not the least of which is American cheese. Monterey Jack is actually okay, but I realised there were huge gulfs when reading an American-originated food recipe online: it actually looked pretty tasty and worth trying, but it referred to "Swiss Cheese". I asked "This looks good, but what sort of Swiss cheese?" this provoked bemusement. Respondents were coming back with "What do you mean, man? Swiss cheese. Swiss. Cheese. Can't get clearer than that." To which I replied "yes you can: does it mean Emmenthal, Gruyere, Raclette?"
"Huh, man? what the hell are those? Just. Swiss Cheese. Jeez".
mutual incomprehension. Then a third party saw the situation better than either of us. Apparently "Swiss Cheese" is a generic American thing, some sort of processed gunk. "you're European, huh? Probably British?" And to the other party: "Those are cheeses. From Switzerland. The country."
so there's a difference between Swiss cheese. And cheese from Switzerland. Given American cheese largely consists of stuff with the colour and consistency of soap and none of the taste (and Monterey is excempt from this)I am not filled with confidence... whatever you think of the EU, it has far better cheese.
