I feel it is important to note that the fullbacks, who defend the goal as determinedly as the goalie, do so without the benefit of protective padding, and in doing so often end up the most injured in the teams

I agree that fullbacks do seem to receive more than their fair share of injuries, but this does allow them to limp away to the pub earlier.
Diving on plastic grass is not pleasant, but the knees do heal over in time. Perhaps the author could have touched on the spiritual harm inflicted by synthetic turf as well?
