Some icons are a positive hinderance to understanding - for example, in IE, the icons for "encoding" and "related" don't help at all.

Yes, my own belief is that unless there is a really, totally straight forward and obvious icon for something then don't bother giving it one. These days, the concepts behind many computer functions are so complex that abstract symbols simply add to the confusion!

I am slightly perturbed by the religious connotation of "icon". On the other hand, I can't think of a better term and it does give us scope to be iconoclasts
