A Conversation for Computer Icons
Backwards Iconography
DickieP Started conversation Feb 1, 2000
There's an interesting aside in Douglas Coupland's Microserfs about backwards designing software from objects in the real world (i.e, desktops, filing cabinets). He mentions that someone is working on what the software equivalent of a gun would be.
In relation to this (very fine) h2g2 article, I would like to propose Backwards Iconography, where real world objects are turned into icons for software that matches them closely. Examples might include an ostrich with it's head in the sand for non-java browsers or an umbrella with no cloth left for a Dragon32 emulator.
