According to the German rag "Die Zeit" (Nr. 47, 18.11.99 "Leben" page 19) Yap used to have a currency made of stone coins with a diameter of up to four (4) meters. Didn't say whether or not they were called Ningies. According to the CIA World Fact Book 1999: "Labor force-by occupation: two-thirds are government employees" That *might* explain a lot.

I've heard of the stone coins of the Island of Yap. Apparently the big ones aren't actually moved, but rather have the coin's history imprinted on them so that you can tell who the coin belongs to.
I just stopped by because this article is ALWAYS on the most neglected articles list, and I felt sorry for it
