If hitchhiking was safe in the UK would you do it?

If it was possible to track both the hiker and the driver for the duration of the journey would you a) hitchhike b) pick up a hitchhiker?
If there was a hitchhiking rivival and it became popular would you consider doing it to work/shopping?
Hitchhiking can reduce emissions, cut traffic on the roads and create much needed interaction between the people of the UK - is fear the only reason we don't do it?
If hitchhiking was safe in the UK would you do it?

I probably wouldn't rely on it to go to work, but I think the main reason few people hitchhike is because they dislike the interaction. I myself don't mind it.
