The story I heard when growing up was that the modern Kilt and its various paraphernalia was an invention of the Victorian middle classes in lowland Scotland. The most common use today is that of 'black tie' formal wear, worn with either a waist length 'Argyll' jacket or the dinner jacket style 'Prince Charlie'(worn with a waistcoat). I personally favour the Argyll as it seems a little less like a b*stardised dinner jacket. Unfortunately not many hotels or restaurants will admit you wearing a dirk. As for weeing wearing a Kilt - stand over a roadside drain, relax and smile.

The story I heard was that the modern kilt was invented by a mill owner who saw the devastating effect of getting any loose parts of the feilidh mhor (great kilt or great plaid) caught in fast moving machinery.

But being a Victorian mill-owner, he'd have been more worried about damage to the delicate fast-moving machinery (expensive to repair with consequent loss of revenue while it was out of action) rather than to the employee? (two a penny and easy to replace)

There were Victorian mill owners who gave a damn about their employees and were generally nice caring people.
